Manulife Mutual Funds Expands Emerging Markets Range

Canada’s Manulife Mutual Funds has added to its range of funds oriented towards global growth with two new emerging markets trust funds and an emerging markets corporate class, as well a new product for Canadian balanced investors.

The Manulife Emerging Markets Debt Fund targets yield opportunities in growth markets. It is managed by John Iles, senior managing director and portfolio manager; Dan Janis, senior managing director and senior portfolio manager; and Yu-Ming Wang, head of fixed income at Manulife Asset Management .

The Manulife Emerging Markets Balanced Fund is intended to provide exposure to a mix of emerging markets debt and equity. It will operate with a fund-of-funds structure, divided between the Manulife Emerging Markets Fund and the Manulife Emerging Markets Debt Fund. The equity managers are Christopher Arbuthnot, senior managing director and senior portfolio manager, and Amine Benali, director and portfolio manager. Iles will oversee fixed income assets.

The firm is also offering a Manulife Emerging Markets Equity Class, which will just give exposure to companies in these markets, as managed by Arbuthnot and Benali.

In addition to the new launches, the mutual fund firm has launched a mandate available as a trust or corporate class offering exposure to both the Canadian and global economies. Using a fund-of-fund approach, the Manulife Canadian Opportunities Balanced Fund/Class invests on a “relatively unconstrained” basis in the Canadian equity market, as well as a basket of government, corporate investment grade, and high-yield bonds through holdings in other Manulife funds.
